Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo!
The Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo was born during one of the most challenging times in recent history — the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic. In November of 2020, as the world grappled with the nightmare of lockdowns and social distancing, a group of passionate reptile enthusiasts saw an opportunity to create something positive for the community: a safe, educational event dedicated to the world of exotic pets, specifically reptiles.
Amid the chaos and uncertainty, the team behind the Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo envisioned an event that would bring together breeders, hobbyists, pet owners, and the general public in one safe, controlled environment to showcase and celebrate the beauty of reptiles and exotic animals. The goal was not only to provide an outlet for those who loved these fascinating creatures, but to educate the public about the joys and responsibilities of owning exotic pets, while also connecting these pets with their forever homes. It was a place to not only meet potential new pet owners but with the hopes to ensure that every animal found a caring, responsible home.
In addition to connecting people with exotic pets, the Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo was also designed to support smaller reptile and exotic pet shows in the region. The fact is, while the Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo is a major event held only two times a year, pet owners need ongoing access to the supplies, feed, and resources required to care for their exotic pets. Most local pet stores do not carry a sufficiently broad selection to meet the needs of reptile and exotic pet owners. This is where the smaller, monthly and bi-monthly reptile shows across the region come into play. These shows, often held in various locations throughout the year, offer a more consistent, reliable outlet for pet owners to find the specialized care items their pets need to stay healthy.
After months of planning, the first Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo finally debuted on May 29th & 30th, 2021 — Memorial Day weekend — a fitting time for the event to launch as it coincided with the start of summer, a season many people associate with outdoor adventure and exploration. Despite the lingering effects of the pandemic, the inaugural show exceeded expectations, drawing a diverse crowd of reptile enthusiasts eager to learn, shop, and connect.
Since that first successful event, the Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo has quickly become a biannual tradition, held twice a year: once on the last weekend in May (Memorial Day weekend) and again on the second weekend in September. These dates have allowed the Expo to become a staple in the reptile and exotic pet communities, offering enthusiasts the chance to experience new animals, meet renowned breeders, and access rare species in a safe and welcoming environment.
Over the past four years, the Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo has grown exponentially, attracting more than 25,000 attendees. This influx of visitors speaks to the growing interest and appreciation for the exotic pet industry in Pittsburgh and beyond. The Expo has become a hub for both first-time pet owners and seasoned reptile hobbyists, creating an opportunity to learn about proper pet care, husbandry, and conservation efforts, all while providing a chance to meet some of the best breeders and vendors in the hobby.
Attendees can find a wide array of reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and other exotic pets for sale, as well as supplies, cages, and enrichment items. But the event is about much more than shopping; it’s a place where people can learn directly from the experts — the breeders and vendors themselves. Many of these vendors are not just sellers, but passionate hobbyists and conservationists who take the time to educate guests on the needs and care of their animals. Whether it’s an exotic snake, a colorful gecko, or a rare species of frog, there’s always an opportunity to ask questions and gain insights into responsible pet ownership.
In addition to supporting pet owners and hobbyists, the Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo has also contributed significantly to the welfare of animals. To date, the Expo has raised over $20,000 in donations, which have been directed toward emergency care and support for animals in need. These funds have been used to provide medical care for injured or sick animals, assist with animal rescue operations, and support local wildlife conservation initiatives. The Expo’s commitment to the health and well-being of animals highlights the organization’s deep-rooted passion for the creatures it celebrates.
The Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo continues to thrive as a celebration of reptiles, exotic animals, and the people who care for them. As it enters its fifth year, the event shows no signs of slowing down. It remains a place for learning, growing, and connecting, where all reptile lovers — from the curious to the seasoned professionals — can come together to share their passion for these incredible creatures.
Through its growth, education, and community outreach, the Pittsburgh Mega Reptile Expo has established itself as a key event in the world of exotic pets and continues to serve as a vital resource for pet owners, enthusiasts, and animal lovers alike.
